Getting Healthy: Where to begin?

Jill Piazza, PT, DPT

How many times have you heard health experts talk about the importance of fitness and exercise? Too many to count?

Living a healthy lifestyle is key to preventing conditions ranging from diabetes to heart disease. Every year, many of us start out the new school year or the new calendar year committed to doing what’s right for our bodies. We will get in shape, exercise every day, be fit and lose weight.

How do we actually put these goals into action? Where do we even start? Making the choice to start living a healthier lifestyle is the easy part. The hard part is figuring out where to begin and sticking to it for the long term.

Here are some tips to get you started on revamping your exercise routine and getting fit in this new school year:

Avoid the common pitfalls

Choose one or two goals to focus on at a time (not 10!).

Choose a schedule that is sustainable.

If you’ll be going to the gym for the first time, consider meeting with the personal trainers so together you can create a program that’s right for you.

Fitting it all in

Changing habits is difficult. Start with a reasonable schedule and short durations.

Find an accountability buddy who has similar goals.

Change some of the things you already do to incorporate more activity: Take the stairs, park farther away at the grocery store or work, stand during meetings or have walking meetings, stand and pace when on the phone, walk to your coworker’s desk to talk rather than calling, choose family activities and outings that incorporate physical activities (e.g. rather than watching a movie, go to the park), and put your smartphone down!

Getting started

Safety is number one. ALWAYS start with a visit to your doctor. If you don’t have a primary care physician, get one!

Know your numbers, especially your blood pressure, waist circumference, cholesterol and blood glucose. Be sure to have these areas tested, and ask your doctor to share the results with you on an annual basis.
